Amazon has revealed that Kindle ebook purchases outsold paperback book sales in the US in Q4 2010. The trend continues this year, with 115 ebook downloads being sold for every 100 paperback books since the beginning of January, excluding any free book downloads offered by the multi-national retailer. Paperback good, digital better Eager not to shoot itself in the foot, Amazon insists that paperback sales are growing too. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said, "Last July we announced that Kindle books had passed hardcovers and predicted that Kindle would surpass paperbacks in the second quarter of this year. "So this milestone has come even sooner than we expected - and it's on top of continued growth in paperback sales." Amazon was recently crowned to be the king of the e-reader market with industry figures showing that its Kindle has taken 41.5 per cent of the market . The Kindle downloads no doubt also feature a significant number of purchases through Amazon's free Kindle smartphone, tablet and desktop apps.
